My husband was in a motorcycle accident March 14th. It has him off work until at least May 1st when the cast comes off. He doesn’t get many weekends off, so we have been taking advantage! When life gives you lemons…
The Smith Center
On Friday, April 6th, it was Jake Shimabukuro at the Smith Center in Las Vegas This man plays the ukulele like Jimi Hendrix played the guitar. His music spans across genres with rock n roll, jazz, classical, and traditional Hawaiian music. (Hawaii is his home.) Check him out on YouTube. And if you get the chance to see him in person, I urge you to do so. Music lovers won’t be disappointed.
April 14th, it was the Henderson Bluesfest. Gates opened at 3PM, and we were entertained for the next 7 hours. First to perform was Taz Niederauer, the young man pictured at the top of the post. He is 14 years old and out of this world. He plays like a cross between Jimi Hendrix and Santana. We were totally blown away.
Next was Quinn Sullivan, 19 years of age, another impressive guitarist. Loved his style. Both Taz and Quinn performed songs by Jimi Hendrix. Terrific way to show off their mad guitar skills. They both had original material as well. I plan to keep following them as their careers develop.
3rd to perform was Taj Mahal. On a steel guitar, and music with a Deep South flavor, his performance was accompanied by jokes and good humor. A real treat.
The last performer was Johnny Lang – the headliner. I have been a fan for years. Sadly, I couldn’t sit through his set. (Hence no picture.) Having a seat in the 8th row, the music was so loud, I lasted through almost three songs before I got up and left. It’s one thing to feel the bass, and quite another to feel as if it’s trying to punch holes in you. The music and words were both badly distorted. My husband tried to stay a bit longer, but soon abandoned the concert too. Apparently, almost the entire row left after I did. It was disappointing.
Circuit of the Americas
And for this upcoming weekend, we are heading to Austin, TX for MotoGP:
MotoGP attracts racers and fans from all over the globe. The only MotoGP race that takes place in the United States is at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin. This will be my third year since my husband introduced me to the sport.
At this rate, we may need a vacation after Dan gets off of sick leave!
